I own the Bahasa version, purchased years ago. I re-read it because I was running out of easy reading. My first impression of the book back in 1996, I thought it was kinda funny but mostly rude. How dare Mr Garner made fun of the classical stories of Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Chicken Little and many more, hence mocking the beloved Grimm Brothers and HC Andersen! Please understand that I was locked in the tower of fairy tales for years.

Some time later now, I still think part of the parody is rude, although I can see more of the hilarious part of it. Good thing I re-read it because now I can understand which part of the stories are being mocked and why they are funny. Well, it’s a matter of personal taste in certain sense of humor anyway. I still don’t find anything funny in The Three Codependent Goats Gruff though.

Stories on the book:

  1. Little Red Riding Hood / Si Tudung Merah
  2. The Emperor’s New Clothes / Busana Baru Sang Kaisar
  3. The Three Little Pigs / Tiga Babi Kecil
  4. Rumpelstiltskin
  5. The Three Codependent Goats Gruff / Tiga Kambing Gruff yang Saling Mengandalkan
  6. Rapunzel
  7. Cinderella
  8. Goldilocks / Rambut Emas
  9. Snow White / Putri Salju
  10. Chicken Little
  11. The Frog Prince / Pangeran Katak
  12. Jack and the Beanstalk / Jack dan Sulur Buncis
  13. The Pied Piper of Hamelin / Penium SUling dari Hamelin

If the bound copy is no longer available, take the joy of reading it online (for free!) from here.

And oh, if you do have a copy, please keep the book away from children. They may be terrified and traumatized by these stories which can be harsh and brutal at times. We don’t want children to hate fairy tales while they’re still young ;)
